Birth story - Mirain and baby Silyn

Finding out I was pregnant with my second I was apprehensive and exited.

The first time round the local hospital was full and on divert, so we had to drive an hour and a half to the next nearest hospital and after 19 hours of established labour I had an emergency C-section.

The hypnobirthing digital pack helped me deal with and understand my last labour. and made me feel empowered and ready for my second.

This time round I was a week early. Thursday afternoon at 4.30 I had my bloody show, and surges started and were every 2-3 minutes, lasting around a minute. I phoned the maternity ward and they wanted us in as soon as possible, due to my last labour being an emergency C-section (and my firstborn being only 21months).

I felt very much in control with my focus being on the breathing and positive vibes that this was a different birth.

My hubby put our toddler to bed at 7 and my brother in law was happy to baby/house sit till the grandparents came to take over.

We made our way to the local hospital (they had room, but they were on divert 2 hours after we arrived).

We were taken to our room and the midwife scanned over my birth preferences. She understood my wishes for a calm environment, and was very supportive of my upbreathing and my wish to use a bath/pool.

At around 9pm I was examined and was 4cm and in established labour. they wanted to monitor me and the baby so I was on the bed hooked up to the machine. This was a little bit frustrating, but the midwife did offer for me to stand or to try a bean bag.

After some time monitoring they were happy so they filled a bath for me and the warm water was just what I needed to cope with the surges. Around an hour passed and I was back on the bed. I had got a little bit too hot.

I was still doing my up breathing and by this time I had a tens machine on to help also.

My husband was fab making sure I was eating snacks and jelly baby’s, and drinking plenty of water.

I had to be monitored again and requested gas and air. I had a lot of my pressure from the surges in my hips.

At 1am I was measuring at 8cm. I felt so happy that I was nearly there ready to meet our little baby.

At around 3am we changed midwife. It was around this time I felt a change and was ready to push. I felt in control and that my body knew what to do. The midwife examined me and noted baby was still high up but that I was 9-10cm dilated.

I was still being monitored and after an hour of down breathing, the consultant had to be called in. it was then they decided that I was swelling and that the baby’s position was too high and that I would need an EMERGENCY C-SECTION.

I did lose it a bit hearing that I would have to have an Emergency C-section (had flashbacks from my previous birth) but I tried to focus back on my breathing, and the fact that we were in safe hands. My husbands reassurance was a lot of help at this time.

Our baby boy came in to the world 6.18am. his first cry was like music to my ears.

I felt so blessed to have him delivered safely.

A couple of days later in hospital the surgeon visited and noted it was lucky I was taken for a C-section as my baby was pressing down and thinning my first scar and uterus.

I wanted to share my story, and thank the Positive Birth Company for educating and empowering me. I didn’t have the straight forward birth, but I’d do it all again for my boys.
