Birth story - Alexandra and baby Sidney

Sidney was due on 19th October. It was 12:10am on Saturday 19th October when my waters went. I woke my husband with excitement saying the baby is on his way.

Remaining clam I called my local midwifery team who asked me if I was having any surges which I replied no (they started as I put the phone down to them) They asked me to come in to monitor baby and said they would most likely send me home.

My husband had they Freya app on his phone & was timing my surges. He wanted to be involved as much as possible.

By the time we got to hospital they were coming every 3 minutes. I felt in control, using my breathing techniques I’d learnt. Once in the labour assessment unit they connected me up to check on baby. They seemed happy but said I will soon be going home as this was my first baby and would likely take a long time and that I should labour at home. I felt uneasy but my husband told me to think positively and listen to some music which I did.

The midwife came over to check me, to my surprise I was 4/5 cm dilated. I felt overwhelmed.

At this point I was managing well but felt I needed a little help. I remembered my breathing and I asked for gas and air which felt like a relief. After only being at hospital for a few hours, by this point it was half 3am, I was told I was going round to labour ward.

Once on the labour ward I was asked what my labour plan was. I didn’t have one. I knew I wanted her to speak to me in non medical terms and turn the lights down. She was lovely and said she has training in hypnobirthing which made me feel much more relaxed.

She was encouraging me, reading out positive words. Getting my husband involved as much as possible. It felt like it was just him & I in the room.

I got into the birthing pool at around half 3/ 4am. The water took away any pain I had. Using smells and touch I felt in control.

At 05:55am my baby boy was placed on my chest in the pool. My husband delivered him safely with the help of the midwives.

Without guidance from The Positive Birth Company YouTube videos I don’t think I would have remained clam or in an odd sense enjoyed my labour.

People ask me about my labour and I smile & think how amazing it was not just for me but for my husband aswell.

Sidney was born into water & in such a clam way I couldn’t be more grateful to the positive birth company.
